Growth & Presentation Scan

Price From – £59

A Growth & Presentation Scan — sometimes called a private growth scan — is a second and third-trimester ultrasound that checks your baby’s growth, position, and wellbeing. Performed from 22 to 40+ weeks, it gives reassurance about how your baby is developing in the later stages of pregnancy.

Parents often choose a private growth scan for reassurance. The scan can show whether the baby is:

  • Growing normally as expected
  • Too small for gestational age (SGA)
  • Too large for gestational age (LGA)
  • In a suitable presentation with placental position checked before labour

The scan can also be performed if you have been advised by your midwife or consultant to monitor growth more closely. This scan provides both reassurance and valuable clinical information — however it does not replace NHS recommended antenatal care or scans.

All results use non-customised growth charts and we advise all findings are discussed with your Midwife following the scan.

Ultrasound assesses growth by measuring your baby’s head, abdomen, and femur, which are then plotted on growth charts within the ultrasound machine. This produces an estimated fetal weight and shows whether your baby is following a normal growth pattern.

While there can be small variations in estimated fetal weight, ultrasound is one of the most reliable and non-invasive ways to monitor fetal growth. Please be aware we do not have access to your customised growth charts and all results should be discussed with your midwife.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow time to fill out forms and choose any optional extras
  • Follow any booking instructions provided by our team via email — you do not need a full bladder

Umbilical artery Doppler uses ultrasound to assess how well blood is flowing from the placenta to the baby through the umbilical cord. It helps assess placental function.

Specifically, it measures:

  • The resistance to blood flow in the placenta
  • How easily oxygen and nutrients are reaching the baby

Results are displayed as waveforms and expressed as indices such as:

  • Resistance Index (RI)
  • Pulsatility Index (PI)
  • Systolic/Diastolic (S/D) ratio

Umbilical artery Doppler assessment is not routinely required in uncomplicated pregnancies. National guidance recommends its use only where there are concerns about fetal growth or placental function, and this assessment is typically undertaken within NHS maternity care. We may offer this assessment if there are unexpected growth findings on your scan.

Please note Doppler assessment of the umbilical artery is only offered over 24 weeks gestation if necessary.
