What Our Pelvic Ultrasound Includes

Every pelvic scan appointment includes:

  • Digital images emailed securely for your records
  • Digital and printed report provided during your appointment
  • Clear explanation of findings, with opportunity for discussion in clinic
  • Option to forward images and report directly to your private gynecologist if you are under their care

This scan provides valuable clinical information, helping to identify or rule out potential causes of symptoms whilst also offering peace of mind. A pelvic scan may be particularly useful if you:

Pelvic ultrasounds can be carried out in two ways:

Trans-abdominal scan: Gel is applied to the lower part of abdomen and an ultrasound probe is used to assess the pelvis. This requires a full bladder to improve image quality.

Trans-vaginal scan (TVS): A small probe is inserted into the vagina to provide a more detailed view of the uterus and ovaries. This option is only performed with your consent.

A trans-vaginal ultrasound gives a much clearer picture of the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries compared to a trans-abdominal scan. It can provide more accurate assessment of ovarian volume, fibroids, or cysts, and is particularly useful in fertility assessments. This closer, more detailed view can detect subtle changes that may not be visible otherwise, giving added reassurance and supporting early diagnosis.

  • Drink 1-2 pints of water an hour before your appointment to ensure a full bladder
  • Do not empty your bladder until the transabdominal part of the scan is complete
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing

Pelvic ultrasound can highlight concerning features such as irregular masses, cysts, or abnormal thickening of the endometrium. However, it is not a dedicated cancer screening tool.

If anything suspicious is identified, further tests such as MRI, CT, blood tests, or biopsy will be needed for diagnosis. For this reason, ultrasound is an important first-line tool but should always be followed up with your doctor if concerns arise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before Your Appointment

Drink 1-2 pints of water an hour before your appointment to ensure a full bladder. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid emptying your bladder until the first part of the scan is complete.

During Your Appointment

Your sonographer will carry out both a trans-abdominal and, where appropriate, a trans-vaginal scan. Each step will be clearly explained. The appointment typically takes 20-30 minutes in a calm, private setting.

After Your Appointment

You will receive a same-day digital and printed report with a clear explanation of findings. You can share this directly with your GP or gynecologist, and images will be emailed to you securely for your records.
