OUR SERVICE

Get to the root of your pain, swelling or injury

Are you experiencing persistent joint pain, muscle discomfort, swelling or a sports-related injury? At Serenity Ultrasound, we offer private musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound scans to help investigate the possible cause of your symptoms.

Whether you are dealing with shoulder pain, a suspected tendon injury, a swollen knee, a painful wrist or an unexplained lump, our ultrasound examinations provide detailed images of the affected area to help identify abnormalities and guide your next steps. Our experienced, HCPC-registered sonographers use modern ultrasound equipment to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and surrounding soft tissues in a comfortable and professional clinical environment.

With flexible appointments and no GP referral required for suitable examinations, accessing a private MSK ultrasound scan is simple and convenient.

What is a musculoskeletal ultrasound scan?

A musculoskeletal ultrasound scan is a non-invasive imaging examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed, real-time images of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissues within your body.

Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionising radiation. It also allows your sonographer to examine certain structures while you move, which can be particularly helpful when investigating tendon problems, joint discomfort and injuries. An MSK ultrasound can help identify tendon tears, inflammation, fluid collections, certain ligament injuries and soft tissue abnormalities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to book an MSK ultrasound?

No. Serenity Ultrasound accepts self-referrals for suitable examinations. However, our team may recommend that you see your GP or another healthcare professional first if your symptoms require clinical assessment or a different type of investigation.

How long does an MSK ultrasound scan take?

Most MSK ultrasound examinations take approximately 20–45 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the complexity of the assessment.

Is an MSK ultrasound painful?

Ultrasound is generally a comfortable, non-invasive examination. You may experience mild discomfort if the probe is pressed over an already painful area or if you are asked to move an injured joint. Please tell your sonographer if you experience discomfort.

Do I need to prepare for my scan?

No special preparation is usually required. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined. You may be asked to remove jewellery or clothing covering the affected area.

Can ultrasound detect a muscle or tendon tear?

Yes. Ultrasound can identify many partial and complete muscle or tendon tears, particularly when the affected structures are accessible to ultrasound. However, some injuries may require MRI or another investigation for a more complete assessment.

Can an ultrasound detect arthritis?

Ultrasound can identify certain features associated with inflammatory arthritis, including joint fluid, synovial inflammation and some tendon abnormalities. It cannot provide a complete assessment of all forms of arthritis or fully evaluate the deeper joint structures.

Will I receive my ultrasound results on the same day?

Your sonographer will usually discuss the examination findings with you during your appointment. A written report will also be provided in accordance with the clinic's reporting arrangements. Please confirm the expected report delivery time when booking.

Can I share my report with my GP or physiotherapist?

Yes. Your ultrasound report can be shared with your GP, physiotherapist, consultant or other healthcare professional to support your ongoing care.

What if my scan identifies an abnormality?

Your sonographer will explain the findings and advise you on appropriate next steps. Depending on the results, you may be advised to consult your GP, physiotherapist or a specialist, or undergo further investigations.

Can ultrasound replace an MRI scan?

Not always. Ultrasound is particularly useful for assessing superficial tendons, muscles, ligaments and soft tissues. MRI may be more appropriate for examining deeper joint structures, bone marrow, cartilage and certain internal joint injuries. The most suitable examination depends on your symptoms and the suspected condition.
