Anomaly Scan (20-Week Scan)
Price From – £129
The anomaly scan, sometimes called the 20-week scan, is one of the most detailed pregnancy ultrasounds. It is carried out between 18 and 22+6 weeks and provides a thorough assessment of your baby's development. This scan carefully checks the growth and anatomy of your baby, including vital organs and body structures, and offers reassurance to parents.

Who Is This For?
Some people choose this scan if they:
- Would like extra reassurance between NHS appointments
- Feel their NHS scan was limited or incomplete due to baby's position or time constraints
- Are experiencing symptoms or concerns and would value a second opinion
- Would like results explained in a calm, unrushed, supportive environment
- Cannot attend or have missed their scheduled NHS appointment
Where appropriate, findings can be discussed in detail, and we will always advise you to continue with, or return to, your NHS midwife, GP, or maternity unit for ongoing care and follow-up.
This scan does not replace routine NHS antenatal care or NHS screening scans. It is offered as an additional, complementary service for those who would like further reassurance or clarification alongside their NHS care.
How Is the Scan Performed?
The anomaly scan is carried out like most routine pregnancy ultrasounds. A small amount of gel is applied to your tummy, and the sonographer gently moves the probe across your abdomen to capture detailed images.
The scan usually takes 20-30 minutes as each structure is carefully checked. Sometimes you may be asked to change position or return later if your baby is not in a good position for viewing. Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, and most patients find the scan comfortable, although you may occasionally feel some pressure. You can carry on with your normal activities afterwards.
How to Prepare
- Arrive with a comfortably full bladder to improve image clarity
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- No fasting or special preparation required
What Conditions Can the Scan Detect?
Not every condition can be identified during pregnancy. In some cases, further scans or specialist referral may be advised. The following conditions are screened for during the scan:
- Spina bifida
- Cleft lip
- Congenital heart conditions
- Missing or underdeveloped limbs
- Abdominal wall conditions (e.g. exomphalos, gastroschisis)
- Diaphragmatic hernia
- Kidney and urinary tract issues
- Severe skeletal conditions
- Brain development problems such as hydrocephalus
For official guidance, see the NHS 20-week scan page.
Ultrasound scans have recognised limitations, and not all conditions or abnormalities can be identified during pregnancy. Some conditions may develop later, may be subtle, or may not be visible due to factors such as baby's position, gestational age, maternal body habitus, or image quality.
This scan does not replace routine NHS antenatal screening or diagnostic care. A normal scan result cannot guarantee the absence of all fetal conditions.
