A kidney and bladder ultrasound — also called a renal tract scan — is a safe, non-invasive test that uses sound waves to produce detailed images of your urinary system. It looks at the kidneys, bladder, and upper urinary tract to check for problems such as kidney stones, blockages (hydronephrosis), urinary retention, or bladder abnormalities.

The scan offers peace of mind for patients with urinary symptoms and provides valuable clinical information to help GPs and specialists diagnose and manage conditions. We recommend that all patients take their results to their GP for review and ongoing care.

What This Scan Includes

This scan is recommended for men and women with:

  • Persistent back or flank pain that may be related to the urinary system
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Difficulty passing urine, poor flow, or frequent urination
  • Concerns about kidney stones, bladder abnormalities, or cysts

It is also useful as a general health check for people with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of kidney or bladder disease.

  • Gel is applied to the abdomen and an ultrasound probe is gently moved across the skin to capture images of the kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract
  • You will first be scanned with a full bladder to assess bladder filling and kidney function
  • You will then be asked to empty your bladder, and a post-void bladder scan will always be performed to check how completely the bladder empties
  • The appointment usually lasts 15-20 minutes, and the scan is completely safe and painless
  • Arrive with a comfortably full bladder — drink 1-2 pints of water an hour before your appointment
  • Do not empty your bladder until the first part of the scan has been completed
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing for easy access to your abdomen

Ultrasound provides a detailed overview of both the structure and function of the urinary system:

  • Kidneys: Size, shape, and position are measured. Ultrasound detects kidney stones, cysts, scarring, or swelling (hydronephrosis) caused by blocked urine flow. Doppler ultrasound may be used to assess blood flow if needed.
  • Bladder: The bladder wall is checked for thickening, inflammation, or masses. By measuring bladder volume before and after urination, ultrasound shows how well the bladder empties.
  • Ureters (upper section): While only partially visible, ultrasound can identify signs of dilatation or blockage where the ureters connect to the bladder or kidneys.

Although this scan provides detailed imaging of the kidneys and bladder, it does not replace a full consultation with a urologist or nephrologist. Ultrasound can detect many urinary tract problems however not all urinary conditions can be identified with ultrasound alone. Patients are encouraged to share their results with their GP for appropriate medical advice and treatment planning.

Before Your Appointment

Drink 1-2 pints of water an hour before your appointment to arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Do not empty your bladder beforehand. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to your abdomen.

During Your Appointment

Gel is applied to your abdomen and the sonographer gently moves the probe across the skin. You will first be scanned with a full bladder, then asked to empty it for a post-void scan. The appointment takes 15-20 minutes and is completely painless.

After Your Appointment

You will receive a same-day digital and printed report with a clear explanation of findings. Your sonographer will advise on any recommended next steps, and images will be available to download securely for your records.
