 Reassurance and Gender Scan

Price From – £59

A Gender and Reassurance scan is a private pregnancy ultrasound available from 16 weeks onwards. Its primary purpose is to carry out reassurance checks (fetal growth, movement, heartbeat, and amniotic fluid levels) and to determine your baby's gender with approximately 98% accuracy, while giving you the chance to see your baby's development at this exciting stage. Many parents choose this scan for reassurance, preparation, and to celebrate their pregnancy journey.

Who Is This For?

This scan is ideal for parents seeking reassurance about their baby's wellbeing after the 12-week scan. It is recommended if you want to check your baby's growth, heartbeat, and general development in the second trimester.

For parents who also wish to know their baby's gender, this scan provides confirmation from 16 weeks onwards. By combining wellbeing checks with gender determination, this scan offers both medical reassurance and the option for a joyful reveal.

How Is the Scan Performed?

The scan is performed in the same way as other routine pregnancy ultrasounds. A small amount of gel is applied to your tummy, and the sonographer gently moves the probe across your abdomen to obtain clear images.

The scan usually takes around 5-10 minutes, depending on your baby's position. If your baby is lying in a way that makes gender confirmation difficult, a free rescan may be offered. The procedure is completely safe, painless, and non-invasive.

How Can You Look for Gender on Scan?

From 16 weeks of pregnancy, ultrasound allows approximately 98% accurate visualisation of your baby's developing genitalia.

Baby boy: The sonographer will usually see the penis and scrotum, often referred to as the "turtle sign".

Baby girl: The sonographer looks for three distinct white lines of the labia, known as the "hamburger sign".

Our NHS-experienced sonographers use their expertise to ensure the best possible accuracy. Factors such as your baby's position, the amount of amniotic fluid, and maternal BMI can sometimes make visualisation more challenging. In these cases, we offer a free rescan to give the best possible chance of confirming your baby's gender.

Important Disclaimer

This scan is not a detailed abnormality assessment and does not replace the NHS anomaly scan offered between 18–22 weeks. Some conditions or abnormalities may not be visible or detectable at the time of the scan, and Serenity Ultrasound cannot be held responsible for conditions identified later in pregnancy.

4D “Sneak a Peek” image quality depends on factors including fetal position, maternal BMI, placental position and amniotic fluid levels. Further rescans to obtain additional 3D/4D images will not be offered. However, if gender cannot be confidently confirmed, a rescan will be offered in line with our rescan policy.
